Family members of Jonathan Pollard have called on U.S. President Barack Obama to allow Pollard to visit his dying father.

The medical condition of Morris Pollard has deteriorated significantly in recent days as his organs are shutting down following medical treatment for a bladder infection, a statement released by the Committee to Free Jonathan Pollard said.

"We are appealing to the Government of America, to open its heart.," the statement said. "To have compassion and let Jonathan have these final moments with his father. To make it possible for Jonathan to kiss his father one last time and to say good bye in person this time."

According to the statement, Jonathan Pollard was allowed to make an emergency phone call to his father who was too weak to speak.

The statement also called on the Israeli government to make an official request to the U.S. government that Jonathan Pollard be allowed to visit his father before he dies.

Jonathan Pollard was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 on charges of spying in the U.S. for Israel. He is incarcerated at a federal jail in North Carolina.
