ZAKA Search and Rescue - Israel

October 30, 2008

Dear Honorable President George W. Bush,

As the founder of ZAKA Search and Rescue, a non-profit humanitarian organization in Israel dedicated to saving lives every day, I am writing to you out of deep concern for Jonathan Pollard, who is about to enter his 24th year of a life sentence for transferring information to Israel vital to her security. Pollard is a sick man and has now served more than five times the usual sentence for the offense he committed. After two decades of the harshest afflictions in prison, including 7 years in solitary confinement, we write to appeal to you to release him before your term in office is completed.

As individuals and as an organization we want to add our voice to all of the numerous appeals for Pollard's release that have been made to you over the years. We humbly endorse the historic and unprecedented call for Pollard's release that was made by all of the Chief Rabbis of Israel, which we hope you have seen. A copy is attached.

Similarly, please find attached a copy of a letter by the former Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, in which he personally offers to be Pollard's guarantor. Rabbi Eliyahu has just undergone open-heart surgery this week and is in critical but stable condition. It would be an act of tremendous kindness to Rabbi Eliyahu, personally, if you were to free Mr. Pollard to be at the Rabbi's bedside at this critical time.

Mr. Bush, G-d has seen fit to elevate you to the position of the head of the mightiest nation in the world, the President of United States of America; and to invest in you powers of clemency second only to His own. We therefore appeal to you, Mr. President, to act mercifully and justly, by setting Jonathan Pollard free and sending him home to Israel.

"From Heaven did the Almighty look down upon the earth; to hear the groaning of the prisoner; to liberate those who are doomed to die?" (Psalms 102:20-21)

Mr. Bush, "Let the groaning of the prisoner come before you; according to the greatness of your power; set free those who are condemned to die." (Psalms 79:11)

Please set Jonathan Pollard, free and send him home to Jerusalem now, and may G-d bless you and the United States of America!

Respectfully,

Yehuda Meshi Zahav
Founder and C.E.O

David Zilberschlag
Chairman of the Management Board

Rabbi Yaacov Ruz'a
Head of the Rabbis committee of ZAKA
