NY Mayor Dinkins Supports Pollard In Letter to Clinton

THE CITY OF NEW YORK
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

NEW YORK NY, 10007

September 24, 1993

The Honorable Bill Clinton
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

I strongly support your announced intention to consider the case of Jonathan J. Pollard, a civilian employee of the U.S. Department of Naval Investigation.

As you may know, many people believe that the sentence given to Mr. Pollard was unduly severe in comparison to those in similar circumstances. There are legitimate concerns regarding the plea agreement itself, particularly indications that this agreement was violated by our government during the sentencing process. While the Supreme Court has denied certiorari in this case, the issue deserves administrative review.

Inasmuch as these serious concerns exist regarding the case of Jonathan J. Pollard, I compliment your decision to immediately review his sentence and the related matters. In the event that no good cause to the contrary appears as a result of the review by the Justice Department, I recommend that you commute Mr. Pollard's sentence to time served.

Sincerely,

(signed)
David N. Dinkins
