Saying Kaddish In Jerusalem

by Esther Pollard

Justice4JP Special Release - May 7, 2001

  [YITGADAL V'YITKADESH SHMAY RABBAH!]

When Jonathan called from prison tonight, the tears welled up in my eyes.

[MAGNIFIED AND SANCTIFIED BE HIS GREAT NAME]

Dear G-d, how I treasure this man and how afraid I am for him...

[IN THE WORLD WHICH HE HAS CREATED ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.]

Sick, tired, oppressed, in pain, Jonathan reached out to comfort me.

[MAY HE ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM DURING YOUR LIFE AND YOUR DAYS]

"Esther," he said, "We are doing all we can. Ha'Shem immanu, G-d is with us."

[AND DURING THE DAYS OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL]

"Be comforted and be strong." he said, "We'll get through this."

[EVEN SPEEDILY AND AT A NEAR TIME.]

Jonathan is human kindness personified.

[LET HIS GREAT NAME BE BLESSED FOREVER UNTO ALL ETERNITY!]

Never was a man so ill-used and so full of compassion for others.

[BLESSED, PRAISED AND GLORIFIED, EXALTED AND HONORED]

Sorely betrayed, Jonathan never broke faith, never lost trust.

[MAGNIFIED AND LAUDED BE THE NAME OF THE HOLY ONE BLESSED BE HE!]

Repeatedly slandered and falsely accused, he remains a man of truth and valor.

[THOUGH HE BE HIGH ABOVE ALL THE BLESSINGS AND THE HYMNS]

Abandoned in the depths of Hell, Jonathan loves, laughs and gives hope to others.

[PRAISES AND CONSOLATIONS WHICH ARE UTTERED IN THE WORLD]

He taught me all that matters: faith, courage, patience, forbearance, trust, love.

  [AND SAY YE AMAIN!]

Jonathan is the light of my life, my shining star, the greatest gift in the world.

[MAY THERE BE ABUNDANT PEACE FROM HEAVEN]

Dear G-d, I cannot thank you enough for this beautiful and precious man!

[AND LIFE FOR US AND FOR ALL ISRAEL]

That is why I am saying Kaddish in Jerusalem. To praise You and thank You for Jonathan.

[HE WHO MAKES PEACE ON HIGH]

Thank-you dear G-d.! Thank-you for the gift of Jonathan!

[MAY HE MAKE PEACE FOR US AND FOR ALL ISRAEL]

Please protect him, watch over him and keep him safe from harm.

And may our eyes behold his speedy return to Zion in wholeness and health!

  [AND SAY YE AMAIN!]

Justice4JP Note on Kaddish

Sections in square brackets and caps are translations and/or transliterations of Kaddish, which is the strongest, most intense prayer of praise to G-d that exists in the Jewish liturgy. Some mistakenly hold negative associations of this magnificent prayer but, in fact, Kaddish consists entirely of praise to G-d.
